This picture is of someones eye extremely close up. You can see every ripple and break in the color of this person's eye. This attracts me because you can see every little detail to this picture. It is also so close up then when you see it you just cant look away. There is not that much historical history found in this picture from what i can see but it does show the beauty of the human eye and how detailed and complex it really is ---Meggie Yancich
This photo is visually interesting in my opinion, for various reasons. In this photograph the flower is what is portrayed to be the focal point of the image. however the background of the image incorporates the flower into the rest of the setting, which is what i find very creative and interesting to look at. The photographer focused on the flower in a perfect way, and although the background is out of focus, the viewer is still able to make out the image of a person, who is places so carefully on the page that it looks as if the flower was part of her. I love this photo because of that reason, being able to blend two objects in a creative way, and still understand the two objects both separately and together as one. - Nicole Downing
I love Nicole's image. I think it is very interesting that the photographer chose a point of view that made the flower appear as though it was the skirt of the girl. This adds a lot of visual interest and brings the veiwers eye to the main subject. I think the depth of field is also very important the the visual interest of the image. The flower in the forground is clearly the focal point of the image, this is further exaggerated because the girl in the background is slightly out of focus. - Annette Curbow
I like this image because it plays with your depth perseption so it looks like the girl is wearing a tutu, when in reality it is a flower. The depth of field is also nice and short because it leaves the flower in focus. The flower is the major focal point but thwn my eyes drift over to the girl and examine the piece. I like this image because it has the center point right in the middle, but is very interesting. Your eye is still drawn to the background of the ballerina. The lighting also sets an interesting mood for the photo. -Caroline R
I love this image because of its creative perspective and subject matter. It is interesting that two completely different objects like the flower and the girl come together to make one cohesive image. I like how the bright light coming from the window contrasts the dark hair of the girl to draw the viewer's eye to her. Though the flower is technically the center of interest because it is most in focus, the photographer ties the background into the photo too by creating the optical illusion that the girl is wearing the flower as a skirt. -Tori Brown
I love how creative and thoughtful this picture is. First of all, ballet is so elegant and beautiful and to add in a delicate tulip as her skirt is near genius. Also the softness of this picture in relation to the boldness of the tulip really makes it stand out. -Haley Yoke
In this photo, you can see that the clear focal point is the man waving towards the crowd (Martin Luther King Jr.), or the deliberate point of view. The main light source is coming from the sky as it is very light, you can tell it is day time. The darkest value in this photo is Martin's coat and the lightest being the white of his undershirt. Martin is clearly in focus, the closest person to the photographer and the people become more hazy the farther away they get, as well as the trees. Space is displayed from the amount of people watching in the crowd and how far back they go and even how far away the seem from Martin. In reality, Martin is much smaller than the trees but he appears much larger than them in the picture. Also the scale is tampered with because some people look like ants the farther away they are, when in reality they aren't. This picture is not just of a man waving to someone in the distance (not in the picture), it is Martin Luther King Jr. giving one of his famous peace speeches. With him waving, it makes us wonder as the audience whom he may be waving to, creating visual interest. All the people in the crowd represent all of his supporters, recognizing this is an important speech and makes us want to know why they all came out and why Martin is smiling. This photo is really inspiring and beautiful compositonally. It shows Martin Luther King Jr. as well as all the support he had. If no prior knowledge was known, many questions would be raised, spurring interest in the viewer. This is the picture that really captured my interest in photography. This was taken during the 2011 Stanley Cup riots in Vancouver. The focal point is the two people in the middle of the road kissing. It almost looks as if this picture was set up, the most light in the picture is on the couple making them clearly visible, but could be coming from the fires or a streetlight. Behind the couple are police forcing rioters back, the comparison between the calmness of their kiss and the chaos of the riot makes this picture interesting. I also like how there is a background, the rioters, a middle ground/focal point, the couple, and then the foreground being the SWAT officer facing the camera. I really like this image of the young man and woman kissing in the middle of the road. In a scene of chaos and movement as suggested by the blurry figures and background, they are a romantic image of peace and love. The light shining down on them highlights the two people as the center of interest. it also illuminates the soft color in their clothing, which contrasts the black uniforms of the people in the background. I like how the photographer made the foreground and background out of focus, to exaggerate the crisp focus of the couple in the middle ground. Overall, this image is very interesting and romantic. I love this image because despite all the chaos around the couple, they are still able to share a moment that is completely there own. I also like how everything else is out of focus including the SWAT officer in the foreground, it makes the image seem more like you are peeking into the moment as opposed to just having the subject in the foreground. the innocence of the couple kissing and the malice of the rioters and SWAT officers contrast each other and make for the subject of the image to be intreging and eye catching. I also really love the colors in the photo everything is kind of hazy orange or black except for the couple they have more variety in their colors, probably because they are in focus.
Shelby Doolity I remember seeing this photo in the newspaper- it looks as if it could be the climactic scene in a movie, like something out of a fairy tale. Very "make love not war". Everyone who sees it seems to start thinking- it was very effective, even if the couple was just caught up in the moment, they sent a message to counter violence. ~Charlotte Chapin

This shows a range of focal points because it shows Hitler alongside his SS soldiers. Then it expands your eye into the back drop of the picture. It draws your eye around the picture with alot filling the composition of the picture.
Cam's picture really shows how in the midst of all the riots of chaos there can be some peace. It has a strong focal point as well as many things to fill the copostition of the photo.
^I think the photo of Hitler and his men is a very interesting photo too. The pattern of the soldiers carries the viewer's eye deep into the photo. I think it is interesting how it is darker on the left than on the right. This puts Hitler into more focus. In this photo the center of the oicture is the focus. It seems as if the light is near ther bottom of the picture. Also the flag could be a focal point. The picture happned during th clean up of 9/11 and shows a true sense of american pride. Even though something happned terrible to our country, a photograph established faith and community among all of us. You can aslo see the steel mess in the backround as well as a ribbon painted on the pillar to the left of the photo.
I also like cam's photo. I like how the canucks lost and a riot broke out. These people are proabbly bruins fans who are celebrating. The focal point is very obvious in the photo.

This picture really caught my eye. It is showing a sailor planting a kiss on the lips of a nurse as happy New Yorkers look forward to the future shortly after the surrender of Japan, finally ended World War II. This image has entered America's and the world's popular, shared consciousness in a way that very few photographs ever have.
I like Paul's picture because it gives off a very couragous and loyal feeling. Also, you really do not even have to look at the description to figure out what event the photo is referring to. This photo is perfect for this assignment because it shows the joy Americans were feeling on this day as this couple was swept up in the moment. The photo looks real, not posed and the expressions on the faces of people in the midground express this as well. The background depicts New York in a different time period which is very interesting to look at closly. -Sara Reiling
This photograph of the flag rising at Iwo Jima has a very strong historical importance because it symbolizes the bravery and heroism of United States soldiers. The focal point of the photograph is the flag which leads to the soldiers below. Also the contrast between the clouds and the soldiers moves your eyes to the flag. Also, the light is coming from the sky, but it is blocked by the haze.
I like Pauls photograph its very similar too mine but the light is coming from separate places (his from the ground, while mine is from the sky).

This historic photograph is one of the most famous pictures ever taken. It describes the comradery and determination of the soldiers during World War II. I disagree with Nick however and think that the focal point are the people raising the flag instead of the flag itself. The arm of the man on the far left leads the viewers eyes up to the flag. The background is also key to this picture because it shows the battle grounds and water that lay at the bottom of Mount Iwo Jima.

This picture spurred my interest in photography because I like the simplicity of the photograph even though there is a very deep meaning behind it. The lighting illuminates important aspects such as the side of the man’s face and the profile of Rosa Parks. The immediate foreground is out of focus. The faces of the two people in the image are the focal points of the image and thus are in focus. There is stark contrast between the window glass and the window panes however the contrast is low between Rosa Park’s clothing and her seat. Most importantly is the contrast between Rosa Park’s face and the man’s behind her; this shows the viewer that Rosa is African-American and the man is not. This can spark interest in the viewer. Compositionally, the photo is arranged so no one object or person is centered but Rosa is to the right in the foreground and the man is to the left in the middle ground. The meaning behind the image is in support of civil rights. This photo depicts the result of a crucial event in civil rights history as Rosa Parks stands up for the basic rights of millions by merely refusing to give up her bus seat to a Caucasian. The result of this event and many other factors ended in the desegregation of buses. This amazing photo showcases the first time Rosa Parks rode a Montgomery bus immediately after the decision to desegregate them was made. Rosa Parks was an influential woman who stood up for her rights and the outcome of her perseverance and bravery are captured in this photo. -Sara Reiling
This photograph is a picture of President John F. Kennedy in his oval office. During his time as president, Kennedy dealt with problems with Russia and the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Civil Rights movements throughout the country. Needless to say, Kennedy was under a lot of stress and pressure. This photo does not show Kennedy’s face, but the stance of his body helps portray is tired emotion. The picture makes the viewer think about what Kennedy may be feeling without actually showing his face. Kennedy is leaning over on his desk, which shows that he may be stressed. Kennedy is the focal point of the picture. The lights and darks in the photo are crisp and contrast nicely between the dark shades and the light streaming in from the window. The way Kennedy is in front of a window allows the viewer to see Kennedy more clearly, which adds visual interest. The pattern of the shades and the lines in the folds of the shades also causes the eye to flow down the picture. - Clare Crowell
Mackenzie Garrity - Clare's pictures is also one of my favorite pictures. The meaning and significance behind everything and everyone in the room is overwhelming. I think the symmetry in the entire picture is important because the simplicity is in such high contrast to the complexity of JFK's life at this point. The high contrast also adds to the mood of the picture.
I really like how dark this picture is because this was one of if not the darkest moment of Kennedy's time in office, the Cuban Missile Crisis. The way that his face was not shown really shows how stressed and unsure of what he was going to do in such a impossibly difficult situation. If he made the wrong decision it could have lead to a nuclear holocaust and potentially the end of the world, the dark tone of this photo really puts an emphasis on this fact. - Hunter
I like Clare’s photo because it shows how stressful that time in history was for Kennedy. I like how the emotion is just based off of his body language. I love the contrast of the photo. This is a photograph of the U.S men’s hockey team celebrating after defeating the soviets in the 1980 winter Olympics. This was better known as "the miracle on ice". Not only does this picture represent pride and joy, it also represents patriotism and triumph as this team was not favored to win but overcame many obstacles as they beat the heavily favored soviets on their own ice in Lake Placid, New York. This photo is focused on the team celebrating but there are many other aspects, for example the fans in the background cheering and the American flag. Also the shadow of the crowd shows that the team celebrating on the ice is the focal point.
Mackenzie Garrity - I think John's photo is very unique.It contains so much emotion and enthusiasm while still being aritistically aware. It is interesting how most sport photographs have a short depth of field so the crowds are out of focus but in this one, everything is in focus. Even though this is against the norm, I think it is more appropriate because it highlights the enthusiasm of the fans.
I really like this picture, it is showing the players astonishment that they pulled off one of the greatest upsets in the history of sports. Also, it is a picture that shows a lot of patriotism, everybody in the crowd is freaking out because they are so proud that their country had pulled off what seemed to be an impossible achievement. i really like that the picture has a fan swinging the American flag in the background it gives another reminder of important this victory and symbolic this victory was because the Cold War was still going on at the time this picture was taken. - Hunter

She was one of many women who went to work during World War II, since most of the men were away fighting and could not occupy the work force. Her facial expression suggests that she is indifferent about the work she is doing, most likely because of the large amount of repetitive work she appears to be doing. Her style of clothing is typical of women in the 1940s. In this photo, the focal point is the woman hard at work, and it can be assumed that the main light source is an electric light located somewhere above the woman’s head. The foreground, containing the women and a large amount of capsules, is well-lit and in sharp focus, while the background is much darker and blurred. The photo has relatively high contrast, and the darkest value is present in the background surrounding the woman, while the lightest value is in the metal capsules where the light is reflected. The large number of capsules creates a visually pleasing pattern in the image, building a sense of repetition in lines. Space is created because the more distant capsules appear smaller in size, even though all the capsules are actually the same size. Overall, I found this picture very interesting, and I want to know more about the girl in it. Tori Brown
this picture really captured my intrest. tha ertist zooms in on the motorcycle will captruing the crowd he backround. he seperated the lights from the darks. there is no dark spots within this picture. the picture has low contrast and shows a good quality of resolution within the picture. he brings out every important detail from the uniforms of the officers to the detail of the motorcycle. the amgle that the picture was taken was perfect since it captures all the important details and he selected a perfect day since there is enough light to take the photo. all around, this artist took a great picture and was a very interesting, eye capturing photo.

This photo depicts a scene during the Los Angeles riots of April 1992. The LA or South Central riots resulted from the acquittal of the three police officers who were recorded attacking Rodney King, a black man who they apprehended. The burning building that takes up the majority of the background, and creates a large amount of visual interest. Seeing this man running with a shopping cart full of stolen items in front of this enormous fire creates an extremely and unexpected scene. The contrast between the bright flames and the man's dark pants makes his lower half look like silhouette, just like the frame of the door to the right side of the photo. There is a sense of anger, fear, but also freedom that this picture generates, which I find to be very representative of the LA riots themselves.

I know that I've used this picture before, but it really is one of my favorite pictures. It was taken by Steve McCurry in 1989. This first think that catches your eye is pf course her eyes. They are such a bright gree and really stand out on her face. With the dark hair and the warm red framing her head. You can literally feel the anger and frustration in her eyes. But it you move down on her face u notice her pursed lips which adds even more emotion into this already jam packed picture. The colors are bright but worn, and the lighting is bright on her face but darker behind her, perfectly portraying her situation as a refugee, struggle but hopeful.
This is such a beautiful image. The contrast between the green of her eyes and background and the red of her shawl creates a beautiful contrast. I Love the intensity in her glare as well. I believe that the focal point of the image is not only the womans face, but more specifically her eyes. The bright green and intense gaze brings my eyes to that point of the photo first. - Annette Curbow

This Photograph is of a middle eastern women covered from head to toe in a corner, with stones being thrown at her. This photo really captured my eye, the fear in her eyes represents the harsh and cruel reality of many women in middle eastern and arabic countries. these women lack the rights we have, they are demoralized and killed when innocent. the photo potrays the sorrow and fear these women live with everyday, they are stripped of there rights, there respect, dignity, and even there lives. the photographer did a great job capturing this emotion in the womans eyes, leaving the rest of the photo simplistic yet, still saying so much.

This is a photo of when the Red Sox won their first world series in 86 years. It is a memorable picture for me because obviously I am a Red Sox fan and it was amazing seeing finally winning after so many years. Also, it is so memorable because you can see the complete mixture of emotions from disbelief and the players being absolutely ecstatic. This picture is shows that no matter how great the obstacle people can always overcome it with the help from one another. This team faced incredibly odds from the "curse" that was on their team to the fact that they were down 3-0 in a best of seven series against the most dominant team and the Red Sox's biggest rival the Yankees. When ever I think of the sport of baseball I immediately think of this photo because for me it was the most memorable moment in the history of the sport. - Hunter

This photograph is eyecatching because it shows a long row of old airplanes that gradually fade into the background. There is a nice contrast between the ground, planes, and the sky. This photo is historically significant because it gives us insight on how events occured in World War One. This photo is of a line of planes getting ready to raid German trenches. The main focus of this picture is on the planes so you have to notice them and every detail on them such as the circles on the side of each plane.
As soon as I saw this photo I thought of this class. It was taken somewhere between 1972 and 1977. The camera with the circular window was built to attract people to the camera store. I like this photo because it has good contrast and it is a about photography. I also like that you can see the reflection of a photographer taking a picture with a bag next to him. This Darkroom is in Los Angeles, however others were built by Disney parks to help tourists with photos and supplies. I also really like the old timey feeling of the photo. I think that feeling comes from the black and white photo as well as the lettering on the shop. This was an okay composition because the focal point is the shop which is in the center, however it is at an angle, not straight on.

This photograph was taken during the cleanup of 9/11. The scenery looks like a movie set with the remains of the towers and haziness of the sky. The light source which is big machine shows that it is night, which I think demonstrate the dedication of the firefighters. There is pretty good contrast in the photo, more on the hazy side because of the sky. There is pretty good balance in this photo. The middle to top half is heavy with the remains of the building. The horizontal line of firefighters and the vertical lines of the building bring movement to the photo. It was taken straight on of the firefighters but the building closest to them starts in the photo off to the left side then angles to the middle.
I like this photo because it is taken from an interesting perspective during a hard time in America's history. The men are so small compared to the debrise but the structure in front is in focus while the ones behind it are not. ~Lilly
Annette Curbow This photo of Dorthea Lange's was taken during the great depression. It is one of my favorite photographs that I have come across becasue I feel that the emotion of the people is so evident. The mothers facial expression shows the worry and fear that many families were feeling during the great depressions. I also love how the three people are breaking the photograph up in thirds, having the middle third being the center of focus. The fact that only the mother is facing the camera also helps direct the eye to her as the center of focus. The fact that the background is quiet helps bring the focus onto the foreground subjects as well. I also love the ammount of grey scale that is present in the photograph. There is a good variation of lights and darks which creates visual interest. This picture is perfect because of how emotional it is, making you feel bad for whatever situation this family may be in, further resulting in pure curiosity. -Courtney Fraser Mackenzie Garrity:
This picture depicts Rainbow Bridge in Lake Powell, Arizona. This picture sparked my interest in photography because of its simple beauty. The focal point of the picture, the bridge itself, is such a unique characteristic of nature and was captured perfectly with a camera. The lighting in the photo shows off the texture of the stone and creates interesting highlights on the water. Also, the range of color and value in the sky makes for a more three-dinemsional photograph. Even though the focal point is in the center of the picture, the asymmetrical qualities surrounding the bridge make it okay. Finally, the photographer did an excellent job in taking this photo and it sends a strong message of beauty and simplicity. -I really love this photo because it is so beautiful and just makes me want to be there at peace, very persuasive. -Courtney Fraser
9 11 Pentagon Memorial A man walks through some of the nearly 3000 United States flags that make up the "Healing Field" outside the Pentagon during the dedication of the Pentagon Memorial September 11, 2008 in Arlington, Virginia. U.S. President George W. Bush will dedicate the memorial, made up of 184 "memorial units" each dedicated to an individual victim killed at the Pentagon when American Airlines Flight 77 slamed into the Department of Defense's headquarters.
One reason I love this image is because of all the different action that is going on. The repeated image of the flag draws your eye across the entire photo. The two men walking around also carry your eye across the photo. Another reason I love this image is because of the emotional response it creates. Each of these american flags represents a life of someone who was lost during 9/11. -Caroline Russell
Although this image is ametuer, I believe its impact is something that should not be ignored. It is an image depicting a man innocently having his picture taken overlooking the skyline of New York city, just as one of the planes flew in to the World Trade Center on 9/11 the camera was found in the ruble and the images were later developed. Conveniently enough I think the image is well composed with the man slightly to the side, where we can completely see the plane. I love how calm the man is, the image is moving because it depicts this mans last moments of life, and his emotion before he realized what was going on. It also makes me wonder what the photographer must have been thinking as they took the image.

Haley Yoke Period 5 This photo surged my interest in photography because the angle it was taken makes you so curious as to what is at the top and what it is like inside that tree fort. I think this picture represents our natural curiosity in life and the need to explore. I just love this picture. It's so exciting and beautiful. The way the light seeps through the trees in the back and how this tree fort isn't made of any one piece of wood. It's made of a bunch of pieces of different wood put together to create something wonderful. What I mostly love about this picture is how it lets your eyes wonder and carry you around the entire photo. Tell me, is this not the coolest tree fort you've ever seen? I wish I lived there.

I decided to choose this unique picture because it caught my eye and attention. This really just focuses on the one pumpkin with the bright orange color and how it’s the focal point of this picture. I like how the artist decided to make the rest of the background grey, it really helps define and stand out the focal point.

This picture's focal point is the little boy in the rolled up pants standing on the industrial machine. The contrast of his white shirt with the dark equipment and out of focus background add to the meaning of this photograph. Also the shadow on the kids face demonstrates his sadness and the reality of the cruel child labor that was part of the United States back in the day. The photo is one of the most recognized pieces of art that came out of the industrial revolution showing the abuse of children during those days.

I chose the photo "relocationist" by Cole Rise because his photographs are so strange and dreamlike, yet also so simple. I have no idea how he takes them, but most, like this one, have people that seem to be levitating in the air. I find it even more fascinating that these subjects seem to be so casual about it. They're just levitating- that's all there is to it. But I chose this photo specifically because of its industrial quality. The sky in Rise's photographs is always very surreal- foggy and/or smoggy yet gorgeous. First off, this image captures the viewer's eye due to the angle of the picture being held within the overall photograph. Also, the colors blend well, and the eye is brought to all four corners of the picture. This image displays that an illusion can be created when two or more separate images are combined. What makes this picture so interesting is appearance vs. reality. Richard Avedon once quoted that all photographs are accurate, but are not the truth. This picture appears to be showing an older woman picking up shells on the beach, when in reality, the beach is empty, and there is no woman standing there at the time. This image has piqued my interest in photography because I enjoy mixing different images and concepts together to create something that can appear to be true, but in reality is pure imaginary.

The photographer focused on the flower in a perfect way, and although the background is out of focus, the viewer is still able to make out the image of a person, who is places so carefully on the page that it looks as if the flower was part of her. I love this photo because of that reason, being able to blend two objects in a creative way, and still understand the two objects both separately and together as one. - Nicole Downing
I love Nicole's image. I think it is very interesting that the photographer chose a point of view that made the flower appear as though it was the skirt of the girl. This adds a lot of visual interest and brings the veiwers eye to the main subject. I think the depth of field is also very important the the visual interest of the image. The flower in the forground is clearly the focal point of the image, this is further exaggerated because the girl in the background is slightly out of focus. - Annette Curbow
I like this image because it plays with your depth perseption so it looks like the girl is wearing a tutu, when in reality it is a flower. The depth of field is also nice and short because it leaves the flower in focus. The flower is the major focal point but thwn my eyes drift over to the girl and examine the piece. It is a great composition.

I like this image because it has the center point right in the middle, but is very interesting. Your eye is still drawn to the background of the ballerina. The lighting also sets an interesting mood for the photo.

I love this image because of its creative perspective and subject matter. It is interesting that two completely different objects like the flower and the girl come together to make one cohesive image. I like how the bright light coming from the window contrasts the dark hair of the girl to draw the viewer's eye to her. Though the flower is technically the center of interest because it is most in focus, the photographer ties the background into the photo too by creating the optical illusion that the girl is wearing the flower as a skirt.

I love how creative and thoughtful this picture is. First of all, ballet is so elegant and beautiful and to add in a delicate tulip as her skirt is near genius. Also the softness of this picture in relation to the boldness of the tulip really makes it stand out.

In this photo, you can see that the clear focal point is the man waving towards the crowd (Martin Luther King Jr.), or the deliberate point of view. The main light source is coming from the sky as it is very light, you can tell it is day time. The darkest value in this photo is Martin's coat and the lightest being the white of his undershirt. Martin is clearly in focus, the closest person to the photographer and the people become more hazy the farther away they get, as well as the trees. Space is displayed from the amount of people watching in the crowd and how far back they go and even how far away the seem from Martin. In reality, Martin is much smaller than the trees but he appears much larger than them in the picture. Also the scale is tampered with because some people look like ants the farther away they are, when in reality they aren't. This picture is not just of a man waving to someone in the distance (not in the picture), it is Martin Luther King Jr. giving one of his famous peace speeches. With him waving, it makes us wonder as the audience whom he may be waving to, creating visual interest. All the people in the crowd represent all of his supporters, recognizing this is an important speech and makes us want to know why they all came out and why Martin is smiling. Did the outcome turn out good?

If no prior knowledge was known, many questions would be raised, spurring interest in the viewer. This is the picture that really captured my interest in photography. This was taken during the 2011 Stanley Cup riots in Vancouver. The focal point is the two people in the middle of the road kissing. It almost looks as if this picture was set up, the most light in the picture is on the couple making them clearly visible, but could be coming from the fires or a streetlight. Behind the couple are police forcing rioters back, the comparison between the calmness of their kiss and the chaos of the riot makes this picture interesting. I also like how there is a background, the rioters, a middle ground/focal point, the couple, and then the foreground being the SWAT officer facing the camera.
I really like this image of the young man and woman kissing in the middle of the road. In a scene of chaos and movement as suggested by the blurry figures and background, they are a romantic image of peace and love. The light shining down on them highlights the two people as the center of interest. it also illuminates the soft color in their clothing, which contrasts the black uniforms of the people in the background. I like how the photographer made the foreground and background out of focus, to exaggerate the crisp focus of the couple in the middle ground. Overall, this image is very interesting and romantic.

I love this image because despite all the chaos around the couple, they are still able to share a moment that is completely there own. I also like how everything else is out of focus including the SWAT officer in the foreground, it makes the image seem more like you are peeking into the moment as opposed to just having the subject in the foreground. the innocence of the couple kissing and the malice of the rioters and SWAT officers contrast each other and make for the subject of the image to be intreging and eye catching. I also really love the colors in the photo everything is kind of hazy orange or black except for the couple they have more variety in their colors, probably because they are in focus.

I remember seeing this photo in the newspaper- it looks as if it could be the climactic scene in a movie, like something out of a fairy tale. Very "make love not war". Cam's picture really shows how in the midst of all the riots of chaos there can be some peace. It has a strong focal point as well as many things to fill the copostition of the photo.
^I think the photo of Hitler and his men is a very interesting photo too. The pattern of the soldiers carries the viewer's eye deep into the photo. I think it is interesting how it is darker on the left than on the right. This puts Hitler into more focus. In this photo the center of the oicture is the focus. It seems as if the light is near ther bottom of the picture. Also the flag could be a focal point. The picture happned during th clean up of 9/11 and shows a true sense of american pride. Even though something happned terrible to our country, a photograph established faith and community among all of us. You can aslo see the steel mess in the backround as well as a ribbon painted on the pillar to the left of the photo.
I also like cam's photo. I like how the canucks lost and a riot broke out. These people are proabbly bruins fans who are celebrating. The focal point is very obvious in the photo.

This picture really caught my eye. It is showing a sailor planting a kiss on the lips of a nurse as happy New Yorkers look forward to the future shortly after the surrender of Japan, finally ended World War II. This image has entered America's and the world's popular, shared consciousness in a way that very few photographs ever have.
I like Paul's picture because it gives off a very couragous and loyal feeling. Also, you really do not even have to look at the description to figure out what event the photo is referring to.
This photo is perfect for this assignment because it shows the joy Americans were feeling on this day as this couple was swept up in the moment. The photo looks real, not posed and the expressions on the faces of people in the midground express this as well. The background depicts New York in a different time period which is very interesting to look at closly.

This photograph of the flag rising at Iwo Jima has a very strong historical importance because it symbolizes the bravery and heroism of United States soldiers. The focal point of the photograph is the flag which leads to the soldiers below. Also the contrast between the clouds and the soldiers moves your eyes to the flag. Also, the light is coming from the sky, but it is blocked by the haze.
I like Pauls photograph its very similar too mine but the light is coming from separate places (his from the ground, while mine is from the sky).

This historic photograph is one of the most famous pictures ever taken. It describes the comradery and determination of the soldiers during World War II. I disagree with Nick however and think that the focal point are the people raising the flag instead of the flag itself. The arm of the man on the far left leads the viewers eyes up to the flag. The background is also key to this picture because it shows the battle grounds and water that lay at the bottom of Mount Iwo Jima.

This picture spurred my interest in photography because I like the simplicity of the photograph even though there is a very deep meaning behind it. The lighting illuminates important aspects such as the side of the man’s face and the profile of Rosa Parks. The immediate foreground is out of focus. The faces of the two people in the image are the focal points of the image and thus are in focus. There is stark contrast between the window glass and the window panes however the contrast is low between Rosa Park’s clothing and her seat. Most importantly is the contrast between Rosa Park’s face and the man’s behind her; this shows the viewer that Rosa is African-American and the man is not. This can spark interest in the viewer. Compositionally, the photo is arranged so no one object or person is centered but Rosa is to the right in the foreground and the man is to the left in the middle ground. The meaning behind the image is in support of civil rights. This photo depicts the result of a crucial event in civil rights history as Rosa Parks stands up for the basic rights of millions by merely refusing to give up her bus seat to a Caucasian. The result of this event and many other factors ended in the desegregation of buses. This amazing photo showcases the first time Rosa Parks rode a Montgomery bus immediately after the decision to desegregate them was made. Rosa Parks was an influential woman who stood up for her rights and the outcome of her perseverance and bravery are captured in this photo. -Sara Reiling

This photograph is a picture of President John F. Kennedy in his oval office. During his time as president, Kennedy dealt with problems with Russia and the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Civil Rights movements throughout the country. Needless to say, Kennedy was under a lot of stress and pressure. This photo does not show Kennedy’s face, but the stance of his body helps portray is tired emotion. The picture makes the viewer think about what Kennedy may be feeling without actually showing his face. Kennedy is leaning over on his desk, which shows that he may be stressed. Kennedy is the focal point of the picture. The lights and darks in the photo are crisp and contrast nicely between the dark shades and the light streaming in from the window. The way Kennedy is in front of a window allows the viewer to see Kennedy more clearly, which adds visual interest. The pattern of the shades and the lines in the folds of the shades also causes the eye to flow down the picture. - Clare Crowell
Mackenzie Garrity - Clare's pictures is also one of my favorite pictures. The meaning and significance behind everything and everyone in the room is overwhelming. I think the symmetry in the entire picture is important because the simplicity is in such high contrast to the complexity of JFK's life at this point. The high contrast also adds to the mood of the picture.
I really like how dark this picture is because this was one of if not the darkest moment of Kennedy's time in office, the Cuban Missile Crisis. The way that his face was not shown really shows how stressed and unsure of what he was going to do in such a impossibly difficult situation. If he made the wrong decision it could have lead to a nuclear holocaust and potentially the end of the world, the dark tone of this photo really puts an emphasis on this fact. - Hunter
I like Clare’s photo because it shows how stressful that time in history was for Kennedy. I like how the emotion is just based off of his body language. I love the contrast of the photo. It shows the depths of his emotions. Also your eye is lead right to the middle of the photo because the windows and flags act as lines that bring you right to Kennedy.

This is a photograph of the U.S men’s hockey team celebrating after defeating the soviets in the 1980 winter Olympics. This was better known as "the miracle on ice". Not only does this picture represent pride and joy, it also represents patriotism and triumph as this team was not favored to win but overcame many obstacles as they beat the heavily favored soviets on their own ice in Lake Placid, New York. This photo is focused on the team celebrating but there are many other aspects, for example the fans in the background cheering and the American flag. Also the shadow of the crowd shows that the team celebrating on the ice is the focal point.
Mackenzie Garrity - I think John's photo is very unique.It contains so much emotion and enthusiasm while still being aritistically aware. It is interesting how most sport photographs have a short depth of field so the crowds are out of focus but in this one, everything is in focus. Even though this is against the norm, I think it is more appropriate because it highlights the enthusiasm of the fans.
I really like this picture, it is showing the players astonishment that they pulled off one of the greatest upsets in the history of sports. Also, it is a picture that shows a lot of patriotism, everybody in the crowd is freaking out because they are so proud that their country had pulled off what seemed to be an impossible achievement. i really like that the picture has a fan swinging the American flag in the background it gives another reminder of important this victory and symbolic this victory was because the Cold War was still going on at the time this picture was taken. - Hunter

This photo depicts a young woman working in an American factory to produce weapons. She was one of many women who went to work during World War II, since most of the men were away fighting and could not occupy the work force. Her facial expression suggests that she is indifferent about the work she is doing, most likely because of the large amount of repetitive work she appears to be doing. Her style of clothing is typical of women in the 1940s. In this photo, the focal point is the woman hard at work, and it can be assumed that the main light source is an electric light located somewhere above the woman’s head. The foreground, containing the women and a large amount of capsules, is well-lit and in sharp focus, while the background is much darker and blurred. The photo has relatively high contrast, and the darkest value is present in the background surrounding the woman, while the lightest value is in the metal capsules where the light is reflected. The large number of capsules creates a visually pleasing pattern in the image, building a sense of repetition in lines. Space is created because the more distant capsules appear smaller in size, even though all the capsules are actually the same size. Overall, I found this picture very interesting, and I want to know more about the girl in it.

This photo depicts a scene during the Los Angeles riots of April 1992. The LA or South Central riots resulted from the acquittal of the three police officers who were recorded attacking Rodney King, a black man who they apprehended. The burning building that takes up the majority of the background, and creates a large amount of visual interest. Seeing this man running with a shopping cart full of stolen items in front of this enormous fire creates an extremely and unexpected scene. The contrast between the bright flames and the man's dark pants makes his lower half look like silhouette, just like the frame of the door to the right side of the photo. There is a sense of anger, fear, but also freedom that this picture generates, which I find to be very representative of the LA riots themselves.

I know that I've used this picture before, but it really is one of my favorite pictures. It was taken by Steve McCurry in 1989. This first think that catches your eye is pf course her eyes. They are such a bright gree and really stand out on her face. With the dark hair and the warm red framing her head. You can literally feel the anger and frustration in her eyes. But it you move down on her face u notice her pursed lips which adds even more emotion into this already jam packed picture. The colors are bright but worn, and the lighting is bright on her face but darker behind her, perfectly portraying her situation as a refugee, struggle but hopeful.
This is such a beautiful image. The contrast between the green of her eyes and background and the red of her shawl creates a beautiful contrast. I Love the intensity in her glare as well. I believe that the focal point of the image is not only the womans face, but more specifically her eyes. The bright green and intense gaze brings my eyes to that point of the photo first. - Annette Curbow

This Photograph is of a middle eastern women covered from head to toe in a corner, with stones being thrown at her. This photo really captured my eye, the fear in her eyes represents the harsh and cruel reality of many women in middle eastern and arabic countries. these women lack the rights we have, they are demoralized and killed when innocent. the photo potrays the sorrow and fear these women live with everyday, they are stripped of there rights, there respect, dignity, and even there lives. the photographer did a great job capturing this emotion in the womans eyes, leaving the rest of the photo simplistic yet, still saying so much.

This is a photo of when the Red Sox won their first world series in 86 years. It is a memorable picture for me because obviously I am a Red Sox fan and it was amazing seeing finally winning after so many years. Also, it is so memorable because you can see the complete mixture of emotions from disbelief and the players being absolutely ecstatic. This picture is shows that no matter how great the obstacle people can always overcome it with the help from one another. This team faced incredibly odds from the "curse" that was on their team to the fact that they were down 3-0 in a best of seven series against the most dominant team and the Red Sox's biggest rival the Yankees. When ever I think of the sport of baseball I immediately think of this photo because for me it was the most memorable moment in the history of the sport. - Hunter

This photograph is eyecatching because it shows a long row of old airplanes that gradually fade into the background. There is a nice contrast between the ground, planes, and the sky. This photo is historically significant because it gives us insight on how events occured in World War One. This photo is of a line of planes getting ready to raid German trenches. The main focus of this picture is on the planes so you have to notice them and every detail on them such as the circles on the side of each plane.
As soon as I saw this photo I thought of this class. It was taken somewhere between 1972 and 1977. The camera with the circular window was built to attract people to the camera store. I like this photo because it has good contrast and it is a about photography. I also like that you can see the reflection of a photographer taking a picture with a bag next to him. This Darkroom is in Los Angeles, however others were built by Disney parks to help tourists with photos and supplies. I also really like the old timey feeling of the photo. I think that feeling comes from the black and white photo as well as the lettering on the shop. This was an okay composition because the focal point is the shop which is in the center, however it is at an angle, not straight on.

This photograph was taken during the cleanup of 9/11. The scenery looks like a movie set with the remains of the towers and haziness of the sky. The light source which is big machine shows that it is night, which I think demonstrate the dedication of the firefighters. There is pretty good contrast in the photo, more on the hazy side because of the sky. There is pretty good balance in this photo. The middle to top half is heavy with the remains of the building. The horizontal line of firefighters and the vertical lines of the building bring movement to the photo. It was taken straight on of the firefighters but the building closest to them starts in the photo off to the left side then angles to the middle.
I like this photo because it is taken from an interesting perspective during a hard time in America's history. The men are so small compared to the debrise but the structure in front is in focus while the ones behind it are not.

This photo of Dorthea Lange's was taken during the great depression. It is one of my favorite photographs that I have come across becasue I feel that the emotion of the people is so evident. The mothers facial expression shows the worry and fear that many families were feeling during the great depressions. I also love how the three people are breaking the photograph up in thirds, having the middle third being the center of focus. The fact that only the mother is facing the camera also helps direct the eye to her as the center of focus. The fact that the background is quiet helps bring the focus onto the foreground subjects as well. I also love the ammount of grey scale that is present in the photograph. There is a good variation of lights and darks which creates visual interest.
This picture is perfect because of how emotional it is, making you feel bad for whatever situation this family may be in, further resulting in pure curiosity.

This picture depicts Rainbow Bridge in Lake Powell, Arizona. This picture sparked my interest in photography because of its simple beauty. The focal point of the picture, the bridge itself, is such a unique characteristic of nature and was captured perfectly with a camera. The lighting in the photo shows off the texture of the stone and creates interesting highlights on the water. Also, the range of color and value in the sky makes for a more three-dinemsional photograph. Even though the focal point is in the center of the picture, the asymmetrical qualities surrounding the bridge make it okay. Finally, the photographer did an excellent job in taking this photo and it sends a strong message of beauty and simplicity.

One reason I love this image is because of all the different action that is going on. The repeated image of the flag draws your eye across the entire photo. The two men walking around also carry your eye across the photo. Another reason I love this image is because of the emotional response it creates. Each of these american flags represents a life of someone who was lost during 9/11.

Although this image is ametuer, I believe its impact is something that should not be ignored. It is an image depicting a man innocently having his picture taken overlooking the skyline of New York city, just as one of the planes flew in to the World Trade Center on 9/11 the camera was found in the ruble and the images were later developed. Conveniently enough I think the image is well composed with the man slightly to the side, where we can completely see the plane. I love how calm the man is, the image is moving because it depicts this mans last moments of life, and his emotion before he realized what was going on. It also makes me wonder what the photographer must have been thinking as they took the image.

This photo surged my interest in photography because the angle it was taken makes you so curious as to what is at the top and what it is like inside that tree fort. I think this picture represents our natural curiosity in life and the need to explore. I just love this picture. It's so exciting and beautiful. The way the light seeps through the trees in the back and how this tree fort isn't made of any one piece of wood. It's made of a bunch of pieces of different wood put together to create something wonderful. What I mostly love about this picture is how it lets your eyes wonder and carry you around the entire photo.

I decided to choose this unique picture because it caught my eye and attention. This really just focuses on the one pumpkin with the bright orange color and how it’s the focal point of this picture. I like how the artist decided to make the rest of the background grey, it really helps define and stand out the focal point.

This picture's focal point is the little boy in the rolled up pants standing on the industrial machine. The contrast of his white shirt with the dark equipment and out of focus background add to the meaning of this photograph. Also the shadow on the kids face demonstrates his sadness and the reality of the cruel child labor that was part of the United States back in the day. The photo is one of the most recognized pieces of art that came out of the industrial revolution showing the abuse of children during those days.

I chose the photo "relocationist" by Cole Rise because his photographs are so strange and dreamlike, yet also so simple. I have no idea how he takes them, but most, like this one, have people that seem to be levitating in the air. I find it even more fascinating that these subjects seem to be so casual about it. They're just levitating- that's all there is to it. But I chose this photo specifically because of its industrial quality. The sky in Rise's photographs is always very surreal- foggy and/or smoggy yet gorgeous. Yet the contrast with what may be a skate ramp, with the submarine in the background is more surreal than usual. ~Charlotte Chapin

This photograph really inspired me to take photography. First off, this image captures the viewer's eye due to the angle of the picture being held within the overall photograph. Also, the colors blend well, and the eye is brought to all four corners of the picture. This image displays that an illusion can be created when two or more separate images are combined. What makes this picture so interesting is appearance vs. reality. Richard Avedon once quoted that all photographs are accurate, but are not the truth. This picture appears to be showing an older woman picking up shells on the beach, when in reality, the beach is empty, and there is no woman standing there at the time. This image has piqued my interest in photography because I enjoy mixing different images and concepts together to create something that can appear to be true, but in reality is pure imaginary.

This photo piqued my interest in photography. The subject matter of the old wrecked boat or whatever is has beautiful textures. The rocks and landscape in the middle of the picture are odd and interesting. But my favorite part is the sunset and how the light makes the clouds look. The sky is my favorite thing to take pictures of. The clouds soak up all the hazy colors of the sunlight. Also in this photo the ice in the water is great subject matter.
